Equine Seminars starting January 17

Dear Fellow Equestrian,

 

We want to remind you time is quickly approaching for the equine seminars. Starting January 17, 2009 and running through March. Seminars will cover all subjects relating to horses, including hands on labs.
Attendee incentives of discounts, free samples and more will be offered.

Information and schedules are below. The seminars will be conducted by Doctors Nancy Bohnhoff, DVM and Stanley Baker, DVM, and Staff plus guest speakers.

Pre registration is requested to insure adequate samples, supplies, publication handouts and class size availability. A percentage of the seminar fees will be donated to the University Equine Program. Registration can be done by phone using a debit or credit card, by mail or in the Heartland Equine Medical Center office. Each lecture will start at 1pm and last until approximately 4pm. To provide the best learning experience each class will be limited in number and filled on first come basis. Register today! Children under age 16 receive a 25% discount

Saturday Jan 17th 1pm Herd Health ( $45 ) (To be held at The Pauline Whitaker Animal science Center )

Vital signs

Diseases, Vaccinations

Nutrition, pasture management

Dental problems

Hoof care

Sheath cleaning

Castration

Acupuncture

Chiropractic

Parasitology and proper deworming procedures

A Hands on Lab will follow the lecture covering Intravenous and Intramuscular injections, dental exams and fecal exams.

Foaling environment

How to handle a new foal

Saturday Feb 7th 1pm Stallion Collection ($75) (To be held at The Heartland Equine Medical Center )

This seminar will basically be a Hands on Lab

Teasing and Handling the stallion

Collecting semen

Semen evaluation

Processing of collected semen (for AI, shipping, freezing)

EVA

 

Saturday Feb 14th 1pm Laminitis & foot care ($45) (To be held at The Pauline Whitaker Animal science Center )

Topics will cover

Anatomy and Topography of the foot

Abscesses

Founder / Laminitis

Thrush

Club feet, flat feet and cracks

Techniques and technology of treating hoof problems

Trimming

Shoeing the laminitic foot

A Hands on Lab will follow the lecture on how to properly trim the hoof.

Saturday Feb 28th 1pm Reproduction Mare Care ($75 ) (To be held at The Heartland Equine Medical Center )

This Seminar is an interactive hands on lab.
Topics will cover

Artificial Insemination

Uterine lavage, pre-breeding, post foaling

Estrous cycles

Ultra Sound

Vaccination schedule

Signs of foaling

Milk test to predict foaling

FPT (failure of passive transfer, when the foal doesnâ€TMt get enough antibodies from the mare)

Wound management ($45) (To be held at The Heartland Equine Medical Center )

Treatment of different types of injuries

Cleaning a wound

Topical ointments and dressings

Dental, Checking and Floating teeth ($45) (To be held at The Heartland Equine Medical Center )

Video on equine teeth

Aging a horse by teeth

Signs of dental problems, malocclusions, hooks, etc

Filing points

Infected teeth

Preventing dental problems

Foxtail in hay

A Hands on Lab will follow the lecture, doing a dental exam, filing points, etc.
