Our discipline is Jose's unique combination of Vaquero, Baroque equitation and of course, Circus. Our goals are building our communication skills with our horses while having fun, entertaining, and for Jose and Rebeccca, promoting the rare Colonial Spanish Horses. Our equine partners are as follows: Roma Lisa and Abrasadora, a 7 yo Andalusian mare, Rebecca and Chisto, a 7yo Colonial Spanish gelding, Erin and Willie, a 8 yo paint gelding, Carol and Gringo, a 9 yo Cremello Quarter horse gelding, and Susan and Espresso, a 10 yo Paso Fino stallion owned by Jose. Jose rides various horses and for part of this year's performance he will be riding Indio, a 7 yo Arabian gelding.

Barcode is a 7 yo Grant's Zebra stallion owned and trained by Jose Aviles. In all the different training programs out there today I feel there’s just not a nickels worth of difference from one to the next. What interests me the most in horse training is not how to train a horse, but understanding why, when, and how much pressure to apply, and of course the what if… Are you a horse whisperer? Arvell is sometimes asked, “no” he replies, “I call myself a student of horses. I want to be the best horseman I can be, and I try to learn something or get better at something everyday”.

One of his first paying jobs off the family farm was riding colts for a trainer who started 2-year olds that were headed back to the track. “I feel terrible about how we went about it”, he says “and it was a real breakthrough for me to finally realize that horses really do want to please us; we just have to help them understand what we want. I’m still amazed at how willing a horse is when we keep them relaxed. My past history with colts is the reason that training horses the right way is absolutely exhilarating for me now”.

One of Arvell’s frustrations is watching people ride well trained, responsive horses and seeing the horses not respond properly. Overtime he has become a master at helping people establish better partnerships with their horses. He loves giving others the opportunity to take part in the magical bond that can occur between man and horse.

He and his wife Karry own and operate a guest ranch and training facility that focuses on good horsemanship. Guests are welcome to bring their horses or ride the horses provided by the ranch. I grew up in the foothills of Colorado on a ranch. I inherited a love for horses from my dad, whom I lost in 2007. I began riding before I could do much of anything else. Some of the names of my best friends growing up were not Sally, or Missy, or Susie- but they were Spud, Brute, Pepsi and Dusty. I spent ALL my spare time with our horses.

I have ridden english, western, and sidesaddle, but by far my favorite way to ride is bareback. In Colorado, I could ride 8 hours solid, and never cover the same ground twice-Now that’s riding! Riding has been my life long passion and I must agree with Will Rogers when he said, “I’ve never met a man I didn’t like, and I say –I have never met a horse I didn’t like- My love affair with horses followed me my whole life, taking me to the present time.

Four years ago, I took a big chance, mortgaged our farm and bought a big beautiful friesian mare that had been imported from the Netherlands. Ynskje Ut It Leechlan- In 2005, Ynskje gave us a gorgeous filly, Pehnina Van Firey-now 3 years old. Both will be present at the 2008 Horse Festival. We are very happy to share these wonderful family members with anyone who is interested in the breed- These magnificent horses will steal your heart with their wonderful temperaments, willing minds and funny personalities. Of all the horses I have had the privelege to know, the Friesian is the most elegant, the most intelligent, and the most wonderful. Ynskje and Pehnina have enriched my life in a way I would never have thought and owning them has been a big dream come true. Friesians are expensive, but if you want something bad enough- just work hard, and find a way to achieve your dreams. We did and we’ve never regretted it!
The "Dandies," the Old Fort Days Dandies, from Fort Smith, AR. are coming to town. Who are the Dandies? "D" is for dedicated. "A" is for awesome. "N" is for nervy. "D" is for determined. "I" is for impressive. "E" is for exciting. "S" is for smiles. These are just a few of the words that could be used to describe the all-girl equestrian quadrille team that will be performing at Horse Festival March 29. This group is known for their high speed, precision riding; executing difficult and daring maneuvers on horseback. Their routine is set to spirited music, accompanied by a caller and it is often referred to as "Square dancing on horseback."

The Dandies were awarded the championship flag at the 2002 Texas State Quadrille Competition.

This year, as in years past, they have decided to take the team on the road. Whenever and wherever the girls perform, spectators are thoroughly entertained by a performance filled with glitz and glitter; as well as breath-taking excitement. After performances at their home rodeo and several other engagements in Arkansas and Oklahoma, they are planning on hitting the road and heading out of state.

Each year the girls must tryout for a position on the team. They are selected not only for their riding skills, but also for their character, scholastic achievement and superior horsemanship. Dedication is a high priority on the list for anyone who desires to be a part of the team, they practice for hours each week, through the cold of winter and the heat of Summer.
