Position: Assistant Professor

12-month tenure-track position; approximately 60% research/40% teaching

Specialization : Equine Science

Description : The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Kentucky seeks an individual to contribute to its research and teaching programs. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, productive and externally funded research program in an area relevant to equine science. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and to the multidisciplinary Equine Science and Management undergraduate major that is being developed in the College of Agriculture . Teaching responsibilities may include introductory courses in equine science and/or animal science, core and/or elective courses in the Equine Science and Management major as well as a graduate level course in the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will also be actively involved in undergraduate and graduate advising and will be expected to participate in some service activities.

Qualifications : A Ph.D. in Animal Science or a related area. Preference will be given to candidates with clear potential for, or demonstrated accomplishments in, excellence in research, grantsmanship, teaching and advising. Upon offer of employment, successful applicants for certain positions must undergo a national background check as required by University of Kentucky Human Resources .

Resources and Information: The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is an academic unit within the College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky . The University of Kentucky is a public, land grant university. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is comprised of approximately 35 faculty and 50 staff members involved in teaching, research and extension. Research programs in the Department have a strong focus on nutrition. Other research areas include microbiology, food science and livestock reproduction. Well-equipped laboratory facilities are available within the Department for the analysis of feeds, animal tissues, cell and molecular samples. The Department offers graduate degrees at the M.S. and Ph.D. level. . The Department currently advises approximately 280 undergraduate students, and the College of Agriculture is developing a multidisciplinary major in equine science and management at the B.S. level that is expected to impact undergraduate enrollment. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is a participant in the University of Kentucky Equine Initiative . The UK Equine Initiative is a partnership between the College of Agriculture and the horse industry. The Equine Initiative was established through efforts of the Gluck Equine Research Foundation, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, and College of Agriculture faculty and administrators, to facilitate collaboration with equine-related organizations and people throughout the Commonwealth to enhance Kentucky 's reputation as the "Horse Capital of the World" through education, research and service (www.ca.uky.edu/equine).
